Insulin
Resistance:
There may be as many opinions about what causes bad health as there is sand on the seashore, but there seems to be one attribute of poor health that is common throughout. It is the presence of insulin resistance.
Insulin is
instrumental in the conversion of blood glucose to energy. Insulin resistance
occurs on the cellular level and is described as a condition in which the cell
rejects insulin preventing it from doing its job. When this happens, the body
responds by producing more insulin. This results in the demand for more glucose
resulting in higher levels of sugar in the blood. This vitious cycle leads to
toxicity eventually damaging or even destroying the body’s immune systems,
leaving the body defenseless against an array of diseases and disorders.
Insulin
resistance is the primary catalyst for obesity, skin tags, discoloration and
dark patches of skin called acanthosis nigricans, high blood pressure, high levels
of bad cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, stroke,
kidney disease, eye problems, cancer, and cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s
and dementia, emotional disorders, and more.
Research verifies
the presence of insulin resistance in all the above conditions and only recently
indicates that it may be the very cause itself.
However, it would be
irresponsible and even naïve of us to point the finger at insulin resistance as
if it were some kind of invader or virus lurking about waiting for the
opportunity to infect our bodies and destroy us. The truth is that insulin
resistance is not something that we contract, but rather, the result of what we put into our mouths as well as other
factors like lack of rest, stress and environmental conditions. The primary cause of insulin resistance is the food that we consume.
The
discovery of this metabolic condition and its consequences has led to an all-out
frenzy of maneuvering on many levels including the food production industry,
nutrition, fitness and medicine. A few of these include the rebranding and
renaming of ingredients to make them appear "Keto friendly" or "Low Carb. We've also seen the birth of many Keto diets, and “Keto foods”, intermittent fasting,
low carb foods, new medications, and a plethora of YouTube videos.
The fact remains that insulin resistance is making us fat, sick and is killing us. The top ten causes of death in the United States today in order of deaths are: Heart Disease, Cancer, Unintentional Injuries, Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease, Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes, Influenza, Kidney Disease, Suicide.
In the case of Suicide, the person likely lived with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder also linked with insulin resistance.
With the exception of Unintentional Injuries every other cause of death in the top
ten is a condition linked to and in most cases caused by insulin resistance.
These diseases are also interrelated in many cases such as kidney disease which
is directly related to high blood pressure, or the relationship of inflammation
to heart disease and pneumonia.
Current
studies prove unequivocally that insulin resistance is the primary contributor
if not the cause of Alzheimer’s disease (cognitive diseases in general), heart
disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.
Research has
further shown that these diseases can be avoided and, in most cases, even
reversed by diet. This is important because it has also been shown that many
medications designed to treat these conditions cause insulin resistance thus exacerbate the condition itself.
What we eat
really matters.
